Moored Between The Reeds

Have I mentioned before that I learn’t my photography by spending a many a misty dawn shooting landscapes on the Somerset levels?. I probably have and 20 odd years on I can still be found wandering the wetlands with my camera.

Although I have explored just about every corner of this area of Somerset it still inspires me to go out and look for new locations and shooting opportunities and I’m rarely dissapointed.

This image titled Moored Between The Reeds was shot on Shapwick Heath which is a RSPB (Royal Society For Protection Of Birds) area.

As often is the case with my work it’s been..ehh Tweaked shall we say to fit my interpretaion of the place as I see it rather than a straight record of the location as it existed.

Origins Of Inspiration.

I’ve mentioned before (probably several times) that I learn’t my photography by spending many hours exploring and shooting out and about on the Somerset Levels here near my home in the South West of England.

Now you’d think after spending so much time exploring one area I’d have had exhausted any kind of inspiration the area had to offer but this could not be further from the truth.

Frozen By The Fog, iPhone Photography

Heavy freezing fog descended in my village overnight and left some beautiful objects in it’s wake.

As I have mentioned before I find the iPhone camera to be a real challenge to use creatively partly due as there is no control over anything ! but this is also it’s appeal and a very enjoyable challenge.

It makes life easier however as with all Photography if you have something as beautiful as this to shoot.

The Stop Line Bridge

I had heard about this location several years ago but never got around to searching it out which is surprising as it’s in walking distance from my home.

The Stop Line is and old World War II Railway track that is dotted with old Pillboxes and bridges and coast to coast from Somerset to Devon. Some sections of it are now part of the national cycle network while others are left to nature such as this location.

This particular bridge is to be found overgrown in a field and looks like if it had just been dropped there with no other clues that a railway was ever there.

I spent about 40 minutes here shooting against the fast fading light with only a couple of deer and birds for company.

The post production took around 2 hours to complete.

B&H Photo Guest Blog Tutorial

A month or so ago I was asked by New York Photo megastore B&H Photo if I would like to do a guest post on their blog.

Of course I said I’d be happy to and produced this short 12 Minute ProPhotoInsights Snapshot Video titled “Moonrise At Greylake Sleuice”.

The image was shot on location for a Digital Photography Tutorial (which I never got around to producing until now) about 12 months ago on the Somerset Levels.

Exposed at dusk with just the last remnants of a fantastic autumn sunset and the rising moon for illumination it was one of the most memorable landscapes I have had the fortune to witness and capture.
