The Lighting Of “Full Time” Football Image

Recently on my other (commercial portfolio website) Blog I have documented several shoots I have recently undertaken to add new Life images to my book.Last week I completed a personal shoot with two models with a football theme  which two are posted here. The idea was to show my models in appropriate football kit as if lit by stadium floodlights at night.I decided that the our largest studio was my best bet to get the lighting at a good distance from my model and reproduce the lighting quality needed.Never under estimate the amount of space required even for the smallest shoots as often placement of lights requires plenty of room to get the correct distance especially with very styled lighting like this example.

I required 3 lights in total two to add the impression of floodlights from slightly behind my model both from the right and left side plus some fill lighting to the front. It’s far better even if you plan to darken the image like here to have plenty of fill light rather than capture the image with little or none.A flat low contrast image can have contrast added in photoshop quite easily but lightening and lowering contrast is not a good idea.A lens hood and careful placement of a flag (card clamped to light stand) ensured the rear light stage left did not cause lens flare while barn doors controlled the spread of light on stage right.

A simple lighting set up but one that worked perfect for my final composite image shown here.

In this concluding video of “Charles Town” we “add the magic” to the image and experiment by using a techniques I admit to never using before on a landscape image.

Using several selective adjustment layers we build up the image while all the time keeping the focus on image’s focal point.

Photography Video, Coastal Masterclass Part 3 “Fowey”

In this 3rd and final part of his coastal masterclass series we set out at dawn to capture some more images in the South West of England.

Showing that not everything can be planned for in location photography we decide to move on from our intended & planned location to another one where we finds an interesting quayside scene.

With beautiful but challenging light we call upon the modern digital photography tools that are available to us all to help capture the scene.

Coastal Master Class, Part 1 “Charles Town”

In this first part of 3 videos we set out on location for a mini tour of the coast in the South West of England.

In this episode we visit the historic port of Charlestown and view an image that we visualize and capture of a boat in the bay with cliffs, beach and the old harbour steps in the foreground.

We explain our choice of lens and how we are going to capture everything in shot we want without ruining the look of the image by stiching two images together.

In post production we chat about some of our shooting philosophies like “shoot on location edit at home” while we go through the images.

This is followed by processing in camera raw and stitching two images together.

The next hurdle is a common one  when stitching images of the sea as we show you how to fix a mis aligned horizon and cleans up a few waves that also need attention.

With the nuts and bolts of the image fixed we end the video with a dilemma regarding the format for this creation which we decide in the concluding part.

In Part 2 we “add the magic” to the image and experiment by using a techniques I admit to never using before on a landscape image.

Embracing Contrast Digital Photography Tutorial Part 1

Many tutorials deal with capturing extended tonal ranges with cameras using reflectors, fill in flash and HDR-Exposure blending software.

Many discuss shooting at dawn or dusk and avoiding harsh light.

In this video tutorial we explain that no light is bad light and this video shows how to embrace harsh summer light and the contrast that is often inherit with it.

In Part 1 we head to the coast where we shoot several locations followed by discussions within photoshop of how we select our shortlist of images and why.

In Part 2 we retouch the second of our shortlisted images from the shoot.

Digital Photography Tutorial Shapwick, “Develop Your Style And Retouch For It”

“Develop Your Style And Retouch For It” is the main theme for this tutorial, trying to shoot something that does not fit your vision then hoping Photoshop will come to the rescue will not produce fulfilling imagery.

Moored Between The Reeds

We head off before dawn and head out on location to Shapwick Heath on the wetlands of Somerset in England.
Here we explore several promising location where we attempt to capture images that are in keeping with my personal vision/style.
We discuss what I’m trying to get from the shots and explain why some don’t work for me although I try as I might to produce something from them anyway.

One Of The Locations That Just Did Not Do It For Me.

Back in the studio we view some of the images we captured and look at some of the finished files before being taken step by step through the retouching of one of the images.
During he screencast we see how the various adjustments can help accentuate what you have captured with the camera.

6 Miles Up Over The Alps

I’m writing this post from the Aegean Coast In Turkey where we have a home.
I never fail to get inspired by flying and the unique perspective it gives along with spectacular cloud formations.
The light changes very quickly at 500 mph so just when you put your camera down there is another shot to be had.
This image along with many others was shot with my very basic and challenging iPhone 4…great fun !
