“The Ice Tree Of Neroche” Digital Photography eWorkbook

Here is our latest eWorkbook titled “The Ice Tree Of Neroche” Emulating The Lith Print In The Digital Age

My first love is and always has been Colour Photography but there is no doubt that Black & White photography can offer us an extra step away from reality and the opportunity to really push our creativity.
Back in the days of film, dark rooms and toxic chemicals ! there was one Black & White process I did love to dabble in, which is also one of the most beautiful and that is Lith printing.

Often awkward to print and difficult to consistently reproduce it often remained in the hands of only the most skilled darkroom professionals to successfully print with.

In this step by step 80 page Digital Photography eWorkbook we  supply you with the Raw image and the skills to emulate digitally this beautiful darkroom process so you can create one of the most beautiful of Black & White processes.

B&H Photo Guest Blog Tutorial

A month or so ago I was asked by New York Photo megastore B&H Photo if I would like to do a guest post on their blog.

Of course I said I’d be happy to and produced this short 12 Minute ProPhotoInsights Snapshot Video titled “Moonrise At Greylake Sleuice”.

The image was shot on location for a Digital Photography Tutorial (which I never got around to producing until now) about 12 months ago on the Somerset Levels.

Exposed at dusk with just the last remnants of a fantastic autumn sunset and the rising moon for illumination it was one of the most memorable landscapes I have had the fortune to witness and capture.

Lighting Inspirations

If you asked 50 photographers what inspires them to shoot you would not doubt get some very varied responses but without doubt one of their inspirations would be great light.

I don’t need much inspiration to photograph my children but I’d be a liar if I said the light in this image had no part to play with me grabbing my camera.

We were out camping and had just finished eating when the light broke through the rather heavy clouds and the whole field in front of our tent glowed in golden light.

I grabbed my camera and laid down in the grass waiting for my children to ignore me which they often do except when I haven’t a camera in my hand!

After 5-10 minutes my eldest daughter Gracie decided to start dancing around the field and I reacted quickly to fire off 6-7 frames while she played to the camera.

I have photographed many people, models and even a few celebrities over the years and my approach to lighting was and still is to keep it as simple as possible.

This is a good example of very simple but stunning natural lighting (no reflectors or flashes).

To me this type of lighting (back lighting) is probably the most beautiful lighting set up’s (if you can call it a set up) you can use especially when shooting females.

The only modification I made was to add 1 extra stop of exposure to my camera meter to allow more detail on Gracie’s face and further lighten the background.

Watch Out For Lens Flare When Shooting With This Type Of Lighting.

Composition In Photography Masterclass “Perspective Control”

I have mentioned a few times to members on ProphotoInsights about the composition video series I was working on and part 1 is finally finished!

To be fair the first video footage was shot 12 months ago while on location but I was not happy with it (me being ultra fussy!) and it got I placed it on the shelf for several months while other work took over.

Later last year I found a great location for what I required while in Majorca Spain and I re shot the footage needed.

Part 2 promises to be available much sooner as I plan all going well to shoot some of it while in Turkey this May.

One To One Training In The Sun

I get to meet some interesting people in my job and even when giving digital photography workshops I have often found myself shooting one of my students.

This occasion I was giving some one to one training to Martin a video-tv camera man who flew over from Spain.

Luckily for us he brought some sunny weather with him and we managed to get out and enjoy a great day’s shooting.
